What ShareX is trying to replace
ShareX is a Windows capture tool that has grown into a desktop workflow system. The basic pitch is familiar: take a screenshot or record a short video. The difference is everything that can happen around that capture. ShareX tackles the wasted motion between capture, cleanup, storage, and sharing, not merely the screenshot itself. Where it is strongest

Annotation is equally practical. The ability to blur or pixelate data does not remove the need to review screenshots before upload. Screen recording exists, but the evidence here does not position ShareX as a full production editor or streaming studio. For scene composition, long-form video work, or live broadcasting, OBS Studio is the more natural comparison. Likewise, users wanting a compact cross-platform annotation tool may be happier with Flameshot. ShareX wins when automation across many small actions matters.
Setup and day-to-day fit

The portable build is attractive for restricted or temporary environments, while a conventional installer is likely the sensible default for a personal workstation. Development builds should be reserved for people willing to trade stability for recent changes.
A good rollout starts locally: configure one capture hotkey, one save folder, and clipboard behavior before enabling uploads. Add the editor and OCR only where they shorten real work. Then build separate named workflows for public sharing, private storage, and local-only captures. That staged approach reduces surprises and makes ShareX easier to teach across a team.

It is excessive for occasional snips and unsuitable for non-Windows desktops, but for support, QA, documentation, and development work, the depth is genuinely useful.
