BetterDisplay 5 puts Mac display fixes in one menu

A BetterDisplay Pro license is listed at $21.99 or €19.99 before regional changes. It is perpetual for the covered major version and includes at least 1 year of updates. The free tier retains brightness keys, DDC, basic shortcuts, virtual-screen creation, HDMI-CEC, and the console. Flexible HiDPI scaling, display disconnection, 3D LUTs, PIP, and many group controls require Pro.
The 14-day trial is the sensible test because support depends on hardware. Published terms require business users to buy a license even where personal use is free. BetterDisplay 5 is a free upgrade only for Pro licenses bought after January 1, 2025. An older activation survives an in-app update, but an outdated license cannot activate a fresh or deactivated v5 installation.
What happened when we ran it
We did not run BetterDisplay at commit 086f01d in our sandbox on 2026-09-11. The unprivileged container had 3 CPUs and 8 GB of RAM, but the harness found no supported ecosystem because the detected language was null. The repository also had no Dockerfile. We therefore have no measured install time, build result, test count, dependency count, disk footprint, or vulnerability result for this project.
Version 5 requires macOS 26.3 or newer
BetterDisplay 5 supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 26.3 or later. Version 4 covers macOS 13.2 and newer through macOS 27, while version 3.5.6 covers Ventura, Sonoma, and Sequoia. Monterey users need v2.3.9, and Mojave through Big Sur remain on v1.4.15. Older Macs therefore miss the current v5 feature set.
Hardware fit is equally specific. DDC needs a monitor and connection that pass commands, and some docks and adapters do not. HDMI-CEC needs a compatible HDMI path and device. Flexible scaling requires a native connection. Claims of up to 1600 or 2000 nits apply to supported Apple XDR configurations, not every HDR monitor.
Soft-disconnect reports make recovery testing mandatory
Open issue 5658 reports a built-in display failing to return roughly 3 times out of 4 on an M3 MacBook Air running BetterDisplay Pro v4.3.5. The reporter reproduced it after automatic soft-disconnect and recorded WindowServer refusing the reconnect request. The issue remains open. That failure mode warrants a trial before enabling automatic disconnection on the same hardware.
Issue 5801 is newer and narrower: an M4 Mac mini owner on macOS 26.6.2 reported that the display stopped waking after an update, leaving a forced shutdown as the available recovery. The report opened on September 10, 2026 and awaits a response from the reporter. The reports are too few to establish a general defect. They put wake, sleep, dock removal, and login into the acceptance test.
Automation spans CLI, HTTP, and Shortcuts
Version 5 exposes display operations through its CLI, console, HTTP interface, custom URLs, notifications, and macOS Shortcuts. Scripts can query displays, adjust values, change modes, create virtual screens, and react to 4 events: connect, disconnect, sleep, or wake. Integration access is free, though an operation controlling a Pro feature still needs Pro. Since display IDs can change, scripts need tested identifiers and a recovery path.
September 2026 activity is strong, while source access is absent
v5.0.5 was released on September 9, 2026, and GitHub recorded another push on September 11. The repository had 33,584 stars and 150 open issues, with 0 open pull requests. Recent closed issues marked as released cover display placement, PIP rotation, right-to-left layouts, and macOS 27 behavior. The dates show active product maintenance and an issue tracker used as a public work queue.
BetterDisplay makes sense when macOS cannot handle the actual desk, especially for HiDPI scaling, virtual screens, or mixed-monitor automation. Its v5 breadth increases the number of hardware-specific paths that can misbehave, so use the 14-day trial with every dock, sleep state, and display you rely on. Choose MonitorControl or displayplacer when published source and a narrower job matter more than one large control panel.
