At 16:30 UTC on August 31, a post about a desert pay phone had reached 544 Hacker News points roughly 98 minutes after submission. The more revealing number appeared later on the phone's live status page: during one hour, 164 inbound attempts hit a busy signal, 21 rang without an answer and seven connected. A tiny piece of telephone infrastructure had acquired an internet-sized audience, while its capacity remained exactly one conversation.
Playa Phone is a blue pay phone installed at 3:30 and Ceiba in Black Rock City, Nevada, for the week of Burning Man. Anyone at the booth can place a free call of up to five minutes to almost anywhere in the world. People elsewhere can dial the booth's public number, then talk with whoever happens to walk past and pick up.
The Hacker News score measures attention rather than reliability, safety or adoption. In this case, the attention changed the thing being discussed. Aaron Hopkins, who built the phone, wrote in the thread that earlier Reddit traffic had already kept its single line near capacity. After the HN post spread, he expected the larger pool of callers to reduce the chance that any one person would get through.
One familiar interface, one deliberate limit
Hopkins started with an ordinary coin-operated pay phone, removed the payment hardware and fitted it for internet calling. SFGATE reported that the conversion uses a touch-tone phone circuit board connected to a voice-over-IP adapter, with an Ethernet cable supplying network access. Hopkins later identified the carrier as VoIP.ms and described the adapter as the inexpensive kind used to connect a classic analog phone to an internet telephony service.
That simple appearance is intentional. When a Hacker News reader suggested adding a recorded message for unanswered calls, Hopkins said ordinary VoIP routing could support it. He declined because he wanted the booth to look and behave like a street-corner phone from several decades ago, apart from its unusual location and zero price. The lack of a menu or voice assistant is a design choice, not an unfinished feature list.
The project page gives the caller only a few rules. A call ends after five minutes. An occupied line returns a busy signal, while an unanswered inbound call ends after six rings. The site also provides a downloadable contact card because calls from the booth's shared number can be silenced as unknown traffic by the recipient's phone. Even this old interface now has to negotiate a modern spam filter.
A 2013 project outlived its first network
The booth began with a family call. Hopkins told SFGATE that he had a young child at home in 2013 and wanted a way to call from the event. Someone objected when he used Wi-Fi at a plaza, so he bought a used pay phone from Craigslist and turned connectivity into an art project that other attendees could also use.
Its first backhaul was far less dependable than the handset. Hopkins said the phone once reached Burning Man's participant network through a Ubiquiti NanoBridge, later a NanoBeam, mounted on a 20-foot tower and aimed at a 60-foot radio tower near Center Camp. In his account of the setup, service could arrive as late as Tuesday or Wednesday of event week, offer about 400 Kbit/s in the best case, suffer persistent 50 percent packet loss or disappear for days.
Hopkins moved the booth to Starlink in 2022. He said in the same technical reply that the handset's microphone and speaker, along with the sign's LEDs, have needed replacement since 2013, while most of the other hardware has stayed in place. The project has therefore changed most at the network edge, where a newer satellite link replaced an event radio connection.
The working path is short enough to sketch without a diagram: analog handset, touch-tone electronics, VoIP adapter, internet link and telephone provider. Hopkins's description of the adapter matters because it keeps the telephone side conventional. The booth does not need a custom app on either end. It translates a familiar local device into a regular telephone call.
One line met a crowd of callers
The status page adds a narrow observability layer without pretending that the booth is a call center. In the snapshot updated at 04:30 UTC on September 1, the phone reported itself online and operating. It recorded seven successful inbound calls, seven successful outbound calls and 1,058 off-hook seconds in the previous hour, alongside the 164 busy inbound attempts. Yet Hopkins said the provider API exposes registration and completed call-detail records, not the live state of an active call. The dashboard can say that the line is connected to the service, but it cannot reliably say that someone is speaking at that instant.
A full event produces a less frantic ratio. For the previous year's 6.5-day run, Hopkins reported 1,460 successful outbound calls to 835 numbers across 23 countries, totaling 34.8 hours. The booth also received 5,658 inbound attempts. Of those, 676 were answered, 4,070 met a busy signal and 912 went unanswered. Inbound calls produced 17.2 hours of talk time, so roughly two-thirds of total conversation time came from people at the event calling out.
Earlier peak years leaned even more heavily on the booth. Hopkins told SFGATE that one tracked year produced 2,000 calls to 1,250 numbers in 28 countries, with lines at the booth sometimes lasting two hours. By 2024, he said wider Starlink availability had cut usage about in half. His later Hacker News figures put the decline in outbound calling at about 40 percent from the peak as cellular and internet access improved.
The new online rush reversed that easing of demand from the other direction. The person who submitted Playa Phone to Hacker News said it was a first HN post and apologized to Hopkins for sending more traffic than expected. Hopkins replied that the one line was already busy with Reddit callers and that several times as many people dialing would mean fewer successful connections. The failure mode was visible and ordinary: callers heard the same busy tone that constrained telephone networks long before social media.
The constraint is part of the experience
The outside caller does not select a profile, enter a room or wait for a matching algorithm. According to the official instructions, the phone rings six times and a passerby may answer. At the booth, a person must know the number of a friend or relative before placing the call. That design strips the encounter down to a public endpoint and a remembered destination, while leaving chance to decide who answers an incoming ring.
Its privacy claim is similarly specific. The site footer says there are no ads or trackers and that the only data collected is on Hopkins's phone bill. His explanation of the status system confirms that completed call-detail records feed the activity display. The public dashboard shows aggregate counts and timing rather than called numbers, but the project still depends on billing metadata held by its telephone provider.
There are practical limits beyond congestion. Hopkins said the booth cannot place emergency calls and that this warning appears on the hardware in capital letters; at the event, people should find someone with a radio for emergency services. The project page also warns that an inbound call may be filtered by an ordinary smartphone because the booth's number is unknown. The same simplicity that makes the phone approachable cannot supply emergency location handling or reputation data for every recipient.
A 13-year-old pay phone drew this response during a week crowded with newer devices and AI products. The discussion does not prove a return of public telephones, and Hopkins has presented the booth as one event installation rather than a commercial launch. It does show a concrete appetite for a shared communication object whose rules can be understood by looking at it: one handset, one line and whoever answers.
What to watch after the rush
The useful follow-up is already measurable. Playa Phone's status endpoint identifies the season as live and publishes rolling counts for successful, unanswered and busy calls. Those figures can show whether the 164-busy-signal hour was a short Hacker News shock or the new pattern for the rest of the event. A second line would improve the odds of connecting, but it would also change the street-phone behavior Hopkins has deliberately preserved. For now, the booth's most interesting metric is the gap between people who want a random call and the single person who can answer it.
