MoofTCP 1.0 is the project's first release of a MacTCP replacement for 68k Macs running System 6. The release page lists November 5 as the release date. For owners considering installation, the immediate checks are System 6.0.8 and an Ethernet driver providing .ENET0. The project's testing covers only DaynaPORT on System 6.0.8.
The pinned 1.0 release notes describe existing MacTCP programs as running unchanged. That is the project's compatibility claim. Its reported hardware testing used a Mac Classic with System 6.0.8, 4 MB of RAM and BlueSCSI v2 WiFi with DaynaPORT. Those results do not establish compatibility with every MacTCP application or another driver and system combination.
MrKeyoor did not run MoofTCP on hardware or in an emulator, inspect implementation files, or execute the installation procedure. The requirements, results and limits below come from the 1.0 release notes.
Choose the build for your address configuration
The full build includes DHCP for automatic address configuration. Lite omits DHCP and saves about 5 KB of system heap, according to the project. The installer includes both builds; its Lite checkbox selects the version without DHCP.
Choose the full build if you need DHCP. Lite is an option for a fixed address when the documented memory saving matters to your setup. The saving is a project-reported figure, not a MrKeyoor measurement or a comparison of application performance.
Match the reported tests to your setup
The release notes distinguish hardware testing from Snow emulator testing:
| Environment | Project-reported coverage in the 1.0 release notes |
|---|---|
| Mac Classic, System 6.0.8, 4 MB, BlueSCSI v2 WiFi with DaynaPORT | Static address and DHCP, telnet with Flynn, Wikipedia Reader, installation, switching variants and Remove |
| Snow emulator | Flynn, Wikipedia Reader, MacTCP Watcher, NCSA Telnet, Fetch and TurboGopher; control-panel checks in full and Lite builds |
An emulator result does not establish that the same application works on the Mac Classic. The release notes also report that StuffIt Lite 3.6 expands the .hqx package. If your intended application or configuration is outside these reported checks, verify it before relying on it.
Check the networking limits
MoofTCP 1.0 has no IPv6 support. Its DHCP client lacks lease RELEASE, INIT-REBOOT and an address-conflict probe. Programs cannot use UDP port 68 while DHCP runs. Without a DHCP server, the first open waits about 10 seconds and then fails, according to the release notes.
Owners who require IPv6 should skip this version. Owners planning to use DHCP should account for the documented failure behavior when no server answers. The closest hardware match to the release's evidence is the Mac Classic configuration above; other combinations need their own verification.
Follow the documented installation procedure
The release provides three installer packages: MoofTCP-1.0.dsk, MoofTCP-1.0.hqx and MoofTCP-1.0.sit. Transfer one to the Mac and open MoofTCP Installer. For a fixed address without DHCP, select Lite version (no DHCP). Click Install and restart.
Open Control Panels, MoofTCP, and set your address. With the full build, you can instead select Get the address by DHCP. Restart again after configuring it. These instructions are a documentation summary; MrKeyoor has not executed them.
The project says the installer moves MacTCP aside and that Remove restores it. That restoration behavior is documented by the project, not independently verified here.
If you encounter a problem, the release notes ask you to run MoofDiag immediately and open an issue with the resulting MoofDiag.out file and a description of what you were doing. MoofDiag is included in the separate MoofTCP-Tools-1.0.zip download. The next useful check is whether your driver, address configuration and intended application match the release's reported coverage.
